The first publication of a substantial selection made from the 738 surviving copper plates engraved under Sir Joseph Banks's direction between 1772 and 1784. The original plates were not published during Banks's lifetime. A small number were printed during the 19th century to illustrate others works (vide Hooker's Flora Antarctica), but the present publication represents the first appearance of most of the images.
