Lot Essay

In 1858 M.E.H.R. van den Kerkhoff exchanged Holland for Java, Indonesia, in order to become a planter. In between his busy work on the plantation, he still found ample of time to paint his liefhebberijwerk: the beautiful East Javanese scenery near Malang. In various letters to the former director of the colonial museum in Haarlem, he expands on his artistic achievements and elaborately describes the way he composes his paintings.
Most of the artist's works are in the collection of the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam, and the artists' work therefore seldomly appears on the art market.(For more information:Marie-Odette Scalliet in Indi Omlijst, Wijk en Aalburg 1999, pp.80-84.)
