Chteau Ptrus--Vintage 1945
Pomerol, cru exceptionnel. Chteau-bottled
Recorked and relabelled at the Chteau in June 1986, following which the bottle was sold at Christie's as lot 25 in the Finest & Rarest auction on 4th December 1986. The full description on that occasion was "recorked at the Chteau in June 1986 for the present owner under the personal supervision of M. Christian Moueix. There are no stocks remaining of this vintage in this size of bottle: it is believed by the Moueix family to be unique. The wine is in perfect condition". It still is, the level being high into the neck. The bottle bears a slip label attesting to the reconditioning on 2nd June 1986, signed by Christian Moueix
In handmade wooden case, with hinged lid. The underside of the case stencilled with the Ptrus label design
Tasting note: I have been fortunate enough to have tasted this wine on a number of occasions, most recently at a Ptrus tasting given Mr Hans-Peter Frericks in the presence of M. Christian Moueix and a party of mainly German private collectors and wine journalists. There were 34 vintages of Petrus in the tasting. 27 of the best post-war vintages, from 1945 to 1983, were presented, all in magnums; and of these outstandingly the best was the '45. This was endorsed by a double magnum of 1945 Ptrus served later. The wine has of course a good depth of colour, not as deep as the '47 but very lively. Its bouquet was immediately forthcoming, very sweet, strawberry and vanilla, opening up further in the glass. On the palate it was very sweet, elegant, flavoury and fragrant. Full yet soft, firm yet supple. Perfect weight, perfect state. The jeroboam will be outstanding. M.B. October 1986
