8 (220 x 140mm). Three folding engraved maps, 2 hand-coloured, wood-engraved illustrations. (Slight offsetting to title, lower outer corners cut from O3-4.) Original blue cloth, decorated in blind, lettered and priced in gilt on spine, uncut (slight fading to spine), morocco-backed green cloth slipcase with chemise. FIRST EDITION of one of Darwin's rarer works. The three parts of Darwin's geological results of the Beagle voyage were published separately over a period of 5 years, though they were intended to be, and were described on the title page, as parts of one work. In the six chapters Darwin describes the structure of atolls and coral reefs, discusses the conditions favourable to their development, and evolves a valuable 'theory of their formation'. Freeman 271.
