The present model is based on the earlier sketch for this subject which Barye had conceived circa 1840 (see lot 179). The artist has altered the design to effect a more compact group. The base has been changed from the rockery to a more botanic element and the features of Theseus are more classical. The effect is less Romantic and more structured and monumental.
