Lot Essay

The design of the present commode by Linke closely follows that of an original model executed in 1778 by the celebrated Parisian bniste Jean-Henri Riesener (matre 1768) for the cabinet de retraite of King Louis XVI at the chteau de Fontainebleau. The original commode was sold in Christie's recent sale of Works of Art from the Collection of Barons Nathaniel and Albert Von Rothschild (London, 8 July 1999, lot 201) and is now back at Versailles.

See lot 507 for a note on Franois Linke.
