Lot Essay

Dreibholtz, who was born and died in Utrecht, came to work with J.C. Schotel in Dordrecht around 1826, leaving to work in The Hague in 1842. Schotel's influence is clearly noticeable in his work (cf. lots 225-9 in this sale). A watercolour by the artist of the same town gate, drawn from a slightly different angle, is in the Municipal Archives of Dordrecht. The Rietdijkse Poort was built in 1590, reconstructed in 1694, and pulled down in 1833. Therefore the present lot can be dated to between 1826 and 1833
