Lot Essay
A prelimiray study for Springer's picture dated 1862, W. Laanstra, H. de Bruijn, J. Ringeling, Cornelis Springer (1817-1891), Utrecht, 1984, p. 133, no. 62-7, illustrated (fig. 1). Springer, born in Amsterdam, was one of the most important Dutch artists depicting town views in the 19th Century. His pictures, mostly correct in their topography, are usually well lit and precise renderings of architecture, and like the paintings based on the present lot, he produced several versions of popular sites on demand. Widely acknowleged as an artist and connoisseur in his time, he and Jozef Israels were invited in 1878 by the Dutch government to give their views on plans for the construction of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. His pupil A. Eversen (see lots 66-9 in this sale) closely followed Springer's style
