Lot Essay

This painting is dateable to circa 1929 and derives from his three year stay in the Cte d'Azur. The contrast between depicting the 'weight' in the solitary apple (a concept assimilated from Czanne's theories on art) and the reduction of the flowers to a flattened perspective are particularly characteristic of Hunter's late works.
