With a rectangular top with a balustrade-formed gallery over a conforming panelled frieze fitted with a drawer on fluted X-form trestle legs with foliate cast cap feet and similarly turned foliate cast stretcher, inscribed on the lockplate 'P. SORMANI PARIS 10 Rue Charlot'--28½in. (72.3cm.) high, 27in. (68.5cm.) wide, 15½in. (39.3cm.) deep

Lot Essay

Paul Sormani (b. 1817) is recorded as having worked at 10 Rue Charlot in 1867 and participated in the Expositions universelle in 1849, 1855 and 1867, being awarded medals at each. He is known for his interpretations of fine French furniture in the Louis XV and XVI styles. Cf. D. Ledoux-Lebard, Les Ébénistes du XIXe Siècle, 1984, p. 588.
