On a tapering square base with husk corners and claw feet, with lions masks on the corners, the column with a part stiff foliage, the capital with furled acanthus leaves and spirally fluted branches, with vertically fluted sockets with saucer-shaped drip-pans, engraved with a later crest and garter motto, John Roberts & Co., Sheffield, 1805

Lot Essay

Inspired in part by the Vatican's antique Barbarini marble candelabrum featured in C. H. Tatahm's Etchings of Ornamental Architecture, 1800, it relates to candelabra designed by Tatham in 1801 for John II Earl Spencer (d. 1834) see C. Gilbert, Country House Lighting, 1992, no. 47.
