"The tendency to mix icons is very ambitious in terms of their scale; the iconographic sources are the works of the old masters. When Gustavo Zalamea makes them his, he proceeds in a selection which carries many suggestions and the idea of the shipwreck is predominant. To develop his idea, the image of the sinking Titanic on the brink of disappearing forever is complemented by Gricault's 'Boat of the Medusa'.
When Zalamea introduces the Titanic and the shipwrecked people from the 'Boat of the Medusa', the Bolvar Plaza [the central square of the Colombian capital and the seat of the government] metamorphoses into the open sea, while always maintaining the Cathedral as a central reference on the horizon. Converted into the sinking Titanic the building of the Capitol is floating aimlessly, while the survivors in their fragile boat are waving for help with a cloth they flap like a flag."
