Lot Essay
"In the representations of Saint George and the dragon [Manzur's preferred subject], Manzur couples dreams with visions of his childhood. The Saint generally appears mounted on a splendid horse, lance in hand, attacking an enemy both bird and scaffolding on wheels. Frequently a female figures also features, only to heighten the mysterious atmosphere of the scene. The ambiguity of the locations, the contemporary nature of some of the figures and the cruelty of the battle come together as a metaphor of reality which confronts the observer with the recognition of his participation, be it as the hero or as the dragon, in the daily events of his surrounding."
