Lot Essay

These tiles, imitating reed matting in the King's palace, were used to decorate the subterranean chambers and South Tomb of the King's Pyramid complex, Saqqara, cf. F. D. Friedman (ed.), Gifts of the Nile: Ancient Egyptian Faience, London, 1998, p. 180, nos. 17-20, col. pl. on pp. 66 and 72 for similar.
