We are grateful to Doctor Maria Teresa Cantaro for confirming the attribution of this picture on the basis of a photograph (letter, 8 September 1999). Doctor Cantaro states that this work is both stylistically and formally close to the artist's series of small portraits produced between 1580 and 1599 (see Maria Teresa Cantaro, Lucia Fontana bolognese, Rome 1989, pp. 142-4; and 'Aggiornamenti e precisazioni sul catalogo di Lavinia Fontana', Bollettino d'Arte, no. 79, May-June 1993, pp. 85-89, figs. 1-8).
