Lot Essay

The viewpoint of the present picture is similar to one by the eponymous Master in the Langmatt Foundation; here, however, the artist has turned to face more directly the eastern bank of the Grand Canal. The Palazzo Grassi provides a terminus post quem for the present picture, since its construction was begun in 1748 and was not completed until after the architect, Giorgio Massari's, death in 1766. In the painting in the Langmatt Foundation, work still has not begun on removing the earlier buildings on that site (see G. Borghero, catalogue of the exhibition, Mythos Venedig, Baden, 1994, pp. 82-3, no. 17, illustrated). The Campanile of S. Maria della Carit collapsed in 1744 and work was not begun on the reconstruction until 1807, after the decision was made to turn the building into the Accademia di Belle Arti.
