The firm of Wilkinson was established by William Wilkson in 1808 and was continued by his sons, William and Charles, after his death in 1833. The stamp as it appears on this piece dates it to after circa 1830. The firm's more distinguished patrons at the time include the Earl of Lonsdale at Lowther Castle and the newly furbished Goldsmiths Hall.

A design for a closely related library cabinet appears in Ackermann's Repository in October 1821 (see P. Agius, ed., Ackermann's Regency Furniture and Interiors, London, 1984, p.133, pl.118).
