Lot Essay
This washstand bears remarkable similarities to a plate of a Bason Stand published in 1794 by George Hepplewhite. Both the design and this washstand feature the same basic form, with shaped apron, medial frame fitted with a drawer and cross stretchers centering a plinth to hold a ceramic vessel (George Hepplewhite, The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 3rd edition (London, 1794), plate 84). For a closely related table formerly in the Charles K. Davis Collection, see Sack, Opportunities in American Antiques, brochure no. 29 (1974), p.1351.
