The arched hood surmounted by a pierced fret centering three finials on reeded plinths above a conforming glazed door opening to a white-painted dial with Roman and Arabic chapter rings enclosing a sweep seconds dial with red and gold-painted medallion and foliate spandrels, inscribed AARON WILLARD BOSTON, surmounted by a painted lunette depicting a seascape with a rocking ship movement flanked by reeded colonettes with brass capitals and bases over a waisted case with rectangular crossbanded and molded door flanked by reeded quarter columns with brass capitals and bases above a crossbanded box base over a shaped skirt, on French feet, with engraved paper label inside cupboard door

Lot Essay

One of three engraved labels made for Willard by Paul Revere, the label inside the cupboard of this clock provides instructions to its owner. Two nearly identical clocks were sold in these rooms June 25, 1991, lot 269 and January 18, 1997, lot 201. Three related clocks located in the Old Sturbrdge Village Collection are illustrated and discussed in Zea and Cheney, Clockmaking in New England 1725-1825: An Interpretation of the Old Sturbridge Village Collection (Sturbridge, MA, 1992), pp.41-43, fig. 2-22, 2-30, and 2-32.67.
