Lot Essay

The original marble sculpture was discovered in 1792 on Prince Borghese's property at Gabi outside Rome. In 1807, Napoleon Bonaparte purchased it, among other Borghese antiquities, and had it shipped to the Louvre, Paris where it can be found today. See F. Haskell & N.
