Lot Essay

The distinctive marquetry of delicate scrolling rinceau foliage issuing from flower-filled classical urns on this commode is characteristic of the work of the celebrated Milanese ebanista Giuseppe Maggiolini, (1738-1814), Intarsiatore delle Loro Altezze Reali. Similar scrolling foliage and urns appear in designs for marquetry attributed to Maggiolini's workshop, illustrated in G. Beretti, Giuseppe Maggiolini, Milan, 1994, p. 216, fig. 216 and p. 217, fig. 292.
