A GERMAN BAROQUE BLACK, SCARLET AND GILT-JAPANNED LAP DESK
Early 18th Century
The domed hinged lid, rectangular case, and arched sides painted with architecture in landscapes, with scrolled handle and scrolled lock-plate engraved with a cardinal's hat, enclosing four boxes and sand and ink pots, the interior with red and gilt-japanned decoration of birds and butterflies in an architectural landscape, the top of the stand set with a panel of Japanese laquer representing architecture in a landscape, above a diaper patterned apron, on square legs with bun feet, the stand associated and 19th Century and with later additional legs

Lot Essay
This lap desk once belonged to a cardinal or archbishop as indicated by the hat and tassles fronting a cross enrgraved on the lock-plate.
