Lot Essay

Cf. Frank Britton, op. cit. (1987), p. 103, no. 19, for the first. This is sold with a type-written note signed by William King, of the Department of British and Medieval Antiquities in the British Museum, and dated 4th September 1948, which reads: 'Dear Sir, The pot was made in London in the 17th century and is either an ointment-jar or a drug-pot.'

According to a manuscript note attached to the second two items in the lot, these two white ointment pots were found at Storey's Gate, Westminster, in 1911.
