Lot Essay

George Marks belongs to the school of watercolour artists including Ernest Arthur Rowe (1863-1922), George Samuel Elgood (1851-1943) and Alfred Parsons (1847-1920), who specialised in the depiction and documentation of gardens. The location of the garden depicted is unknown, but it may well be in Shere in Surrey, where Marks lived from 1887. Marks first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1878.
