Helen Allingham only painted a small number of Somerset subjects, all of which are located near Crewkerne close to the Dorset border. These watercolours would have been executed during one of her regular visits to Bridport where many buildings in outlying villages featured in her paintings.
Allingham's West Country scenes resulted from the public's rejection of her Venetian views which were exhibited in London following her visit to Italy in 1901 and 1902.
