Although this watercolour does not appear to have been exhibited under this title, the composition suggests that it dates from the early 1900s.
The climbing rose, sunflowers and hollyhocks growing by the cottage are the features which made Helen Allingham's paintings so popular; the addition of doves on the roof was a suggestion made by her husband William, who thought that birds and chickens gave a painting perspective as well as added interest. It was by painting scenes such as this that Helen was able to support her three children after William's death in 1889.
