Margetson studied at the South Kensington and Royal Academy Schools. During his long career he evolved from painting in the late Victorian style to absorbing Edwardian and Post Impressionist techniques. One commentator on his work observed how 'his genre studies describe so well, with a sensitivity that is observed in paintings by an elite band of artists, a period which has now a rather nostalgic atmosphere of the genteel and fashionable elegance related to the 1910s and 1920s'.
