Beatrice Leaver has suggested that this picture could have been 'Amidst the forest fern. When Autumn smiles all beauteous in decay' which was exhibited as no. 12 in the Autumn Exhibition of the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, 1872, and which was sold for 189. It should be noted that 'Amidst the forest fern' bears the highest recorded price for a picture exhibited during the artist's lifetime. The subject of the present work appears to be Burnham Beeches which was one of the artist's favourite locations.
