Lot Essay

Edward Lucie Smith (loc. cit.) considers that this work was inspired by the artist's third husband, Alex Csky, who was descended from an aristocratic Hungarian family: 'These pieces are the representations of nomadic Magyar rider, roaming the plains, only half-civilised, always on the look out for conquest. This is perhaps the sculpture in which Frink comes closest to Marino Marini (1901-1980), the twentieth-century artist which whom she had most in common'.

Another cast of this piece was sold in these Rooms on 4 June 1999, lot 170 for /P20,700 (Private Collection).
