Lot Essay

In March 1910 Lowry accepted a position as rent collector and clerk for The Pall Mall Property Company in Brown Street, Manchester. Having risen to the position of Chief Cashier he retired with a full pension in 1952 at the age of 65. Lowry's rent-collecting rounds provided a variety of subjects for his drawings and paintings; he once admitted 'I have put many of my tenants in my pictures.' (see S. Rohde, A Private View of L.S. Lowry, London, 1979, p.55).
