Lot Essay

The cab is an image that appears in Lowry's work from the late 1950s onwards and is frequently depicted moving away from the onlooker. It was originally inspired by a curious contraption that the artist saw once in the streets of Manchester. A pencil drawing of a similar vehicle, dated 1961, is illustrated in M. Levy, The Drawings of L.S. Lowry, London, 1963, no.60.
