Lot Essay

This work depicts passengers disembarking from the Woolston Ferry which operated across the River Itchen until the mid 1970s. A similar painting in which the ferry nears land is in the collection of Southampton Art Gallery. Lowry was fascinated by the number of people who were crammed onto the ferry.
