A GEORGE II GOLD SNUFF-BOX SET WITH MINIATURES
English, circa 1756/1760, the larger miniature by Luke Sullivan, signed with monogram and dated 1756
Triangular cartouche-shaped box, the cover boldly chased and embossed with rocaille, c-scrolls and foliage on a scalework and sabl ground, within a laurel border, the centre later set with a glazed oval portrait miniature of a young girl in white dress with blue bow at corsage, white mob-cap with pink and blue bows, the bulging polished gold sides chased with reserves depicting flowers and a hound within reeded c-scroll borders, the thumbpiece chased as a lion's head, plain base within a reeded stand rim engraved with an inscription, the inside of the cover set with a glazed oval miniature of a lady in brown silk dress with violet overdress, white lace border, pearl choker fastened with brown silk ribbon, pearls in her brown hair, within a scalloped gold border inset in a the gold lining

Lot Essay

An inscription engraved on the base identifies the two sitters of the miniatures as Isabella, Duchess of Rutland and Anne, Countess of Northampton, sisters of the 5th Duke of Beaufort.
Anna, daughter of the 4th Duke of Beaufort, married in 1759 Charles, 7th Earl of Northampton. Mary Isabella (d. 1831), youngest daughter of the 4th Duke of Beaufort, married in 1775 Charles, 4th Duke of Rutland and had issue.
