Lot Essay

The present drawing belongs to a group of studies of a young woman, of which there are pen and ink examples at The Yale Center for British Art, Paul Mellon Collection; The National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; and the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. There is also a graphite sketch of the same sitter at the Wadsworth Atheneum. We are grateful to Patrick Noon for his help in preparing this catalogue entry and for suggesting a date of 1827 or 1828 for this drawing.
