Of oblong octagonal shape with hare-head handles, the cover with a pomegranate finial, enamelled around the exterior, on the stand and on the domed cover with two peacocks on rockwork beside a large blossoming peony, each rim and the spreading base with a floral frieze, minor restorations

Lot Essay

A tureen and cover, formerly in the Yves Mailli Collection, Paris, is illustrated by M. Beurdeley, Porcelain of the East India Companies, 1962, cat.162, p.187, where the author explains that this service, known as 'The Peacock Service', was taken with King John to Brazil in 1807.
