Lot Essay

Although there is no question as to the 18th century origin of the present Svres ewer and basin, its decoration of flower garlands and feuille-de-choux appears to be stiffer than that associated with period decoration. The mark of three dots forming an arrowhead found on each piece is only found on wares painted in monochrome with flowers dating 1756-1757, the date letter also found on the present example.

For a similarly marked and virtually identically painted unmounted ewer and basin of the same form, see Edouard Garnier, The Soft-Paste Porcelain of Svres, London, 1892, plate IX; also David Peters, Decorator and Date Marks on C18th Vincennes and Svres Porcelain, London, 1997, p. 88 for the most recent information on this mark, attributed to Tandart by Garnier in the caption for plate IX.
