Lot Essay

The use of bois de bout floral marquetry tendrils is traditionally associated with the oeuvre of Bernard II van Risenburgh (BVRB), who was elected matre in 1730. It was, however, a decorative motif employed by numerous of his confrres, including Roger van der Cruse, dit Lacroix, Joseph Baumhauer, Jacques Dubois and Jacques-Philippe Carel, so a conclusive attribution is often elusive. Interestingly, of these, both Dubois and Carel are known to have subcontracted work to their contemporaries in their capacity as marchands.

A table, also unstamped, of closely related profile although slightly larger and with a stylised cartouche to the top, was sold from the collection of the Barons Nathaniel and Albert von Rothschild, Christie's London, 8 July 1999,lot 202. Interestingly this also displayed the same model of angle-mount - although those on the present table are probably later replacements.
