Circa 1725
Each with arched padded back, arms and seat covered in associated close-nailed 18th Century floral tapestry woven with a central gadrooned urn of peonies, chrysanthemums and other summer flowers, the scrolled arms carved with husks, lambrequins and acanthus, the waved, dished seat-rail carved with hatched decoration and centred by a stylised scallop-shell, on acanthus-spray headed cabriole legs carved with lambrequins and tassels and joined by a waved X-shaped stretcher carved with flowerheads and rosettes, on scrolled feet, the backs upholstered in chequered blue and beige silk, previously decorated, one inscribed indistinctly 5

Lot Essay

Designed as 'chaises courants' to be ranged around the walls as vehicles for displaying elaborate tapestry covers, these fuateuils are extremely closely related in both design and carving to the suite illustrated in Partridge, Summer Exhibition Catalogue, London, 1995, p.83.
