Lot Essay

Part of a series of 60 views of cities in the southern Netherlands and France in the same technique and with similar inscriptions attributed to Peeters which was first exhibited in 1987. A view of Coucy from this series is dated 1651. Other drawings from this group were offered in these Rooms, 25 November 1992, lot 532 (Etampes) and 15 November 1993, lot 67 (Lier and Corbeil).
Peeters, who worked and died in his native Antwerp, is known to have depicted cities and fortifications by 1670, but may have travelled south beforehand; the series included drawings of Bruges and Angoulme.
