Lot Essay

In circa 1861, Schelfhout put together a Kunstboek of 83 landscape drawings for the Teyler Museum in Haarlem (F. van de Velden, Andreas Schelfhout (1787-1870) en zijn tekeningen in Teylers Museum, exhib. catalogue, Haarlem, 1994). These drawings were based on studies done during the artist's journeys through Holland, Germany, France and England. One of the drawings (Van de Velden, op. cit., no. 12, illustated), is a similar Rhine view, presumably based on a prototype done during the same journey as the present lot.
