Lot Essay

A favourite Rhine view, the Pfalzgrafenstein was already being depicted in the 17th Century, and was especially popular with English artists and Grand Tourists in the 19th Century (for further examples see K. Honnef, K. Weschenfelder, I. Haberland, Vom Zauber des Rheins ergriffen... Zur Entdeckung der Rheinlandschaft, Munich, 1992).
