A German silver-mounted tortoise-shell toilet-box with implements
Maker's mark LRL and RAF, indistinct townmark, posssibly Germany, circa 1730
Of octagonal-shaped urn form, on spreading base with plain stepped silver border, the body with similar border along the lower edges, the lock-plate shaped and embossed with scroll, shell and dragon-wing patterns and with a lion head, the widely open mouth centered by the glass stone push-button, the interior edges with finely engraved mounts showing a landscape with man and birds, the high-domed hinged cover inside with engraved mounts along the edges and mounted with an openworked floral plate with rocaille swing handle, the interior fitted with two rectangular oblong silver bottles engraved with scrolls, foliage and vacant cartouches on tops and bodies, and with a silver and tortoise mounted mirror with silver chain, a pair of richely engraved scissors and a silver mounted tortoise-shell paper knive.
