Each of X-frame form, with solid seat flanked by chamfered uprights surmounted by rounded chamfered finials and joined by stretchers, the legs centred by a stylised rose and joined by chamfered strtechers

Lot Essay

The antique or Roman seat, such as appeared in the London Chairmakers' and Carvers' Book of Prices, 1823 (plate 6), had the X-frame facing the front. The oak seat has its X-shaped trestle ends chamfered and flowered with roses in the Gothic fashion popularised by Pugin's Gothic Furniture in the Style of the 15th Century, 1835.
