Each with a pierced vertical splat below a C-scroll-carved toprail, with foliage-carved stiles, above a close-nailed green leather-covered seat, on pierced foliage-carved baluster legs, later blocks, restorations and replacements, variations in carving (8)

Lot Essay

The chairs, with their serpentined and acanthus-wrapped uprights, ribboned splats and hermed legs with Gothic-cusped frets, relate to 'Parlour Chair' patterns in Robert Manwaring's The Chair-Maker's Guide, 1766 (pls. 31 and 32).
