A REGENCY MAHOGANY METAMORPHIC SIDE CABINET
The crossbanded rectangular moulded double-hinged top enclosing a green baize-lined surface with a further twin-supported writing-surface, the reverse with lopers above a frieze drawer flanked by ebony and satinwood panels, with herringbone pattern lower edge, above a glazed door enclosing two shelves and flanked by turned baluster columns on toupie feet with brass caps and castors, the back with paper label inscribed 'I leave this mahogany bookcase to my dear cousin Annie B. Nierlin(?) or(?) Macphail. Beulah Bank. 30th September 1886. H H Geddes', the back panel hinged

Lot Essay

The overall form of this cabinet, and its Scottish provenance, relates it to the 'Croft' type of writing cabinet, named for its inventor, The Reverend Sir Herbert Croft, Bt. (1751-1816) (see: Sir Ambrose Heal, 'The Croft', Country Life, 17 January 1947).
