A PAIR OF JAPANESE BLACK AND GILT-LACQUER COPPER-MOUNTED CABINETS-ON-STANDS
The cabinets late 17th early 18th century, the stands George III
Each decorated to the front, top and sides with panels of raised gilt pastoral scenes and foliage, with two cupboard doors with nashiji borders enclosing seven variously-shaped drawers, the sides with carrying-handles, on stands with pierced angle-brackets and square chamfered legs joined by a concave-sided undertier, the stands reduced in height and the undertier raised, the decoration on the sides of the cabinets English 18th Century

The Viscountess Sandhurst (d. 1934) and probably by descent to her son The Reverend Roger Wodehouse (d. 1958).

Lot Essay

The interior arrangement of drawers on the present pair of cabinets relates to a pair sold in these Rooms, 24 September 1998, lot 144, although the lacquer decoration on this pair is much richer. The exterior decoration also relates to a further pair, also sold in these Rooms, 21 September 1995, lot 66. Executed in red and gilt lacquer, the cabinets were supplied to William, 2nd Earl of Harrington (d. 1799) for Elvaston Castle, Derbyshire, the seat of the Stanhope family which was remodelled to the designs of James Wyatt before 1813.
