The hinged chequerbanded top, crossbanded in laburnam with radiating central veneer, enclosing a specimen satinwood-fitted interior with sliding mirror flanked by cedar-lined and lidded wells to each side, above a simulated writing-slide and drawer, on tapering serpentine legs, formally with a stretcher

Lot Essay

A pattern for a hinged top 'Lady's Dressing Table' featured in Messrs. A. Hepplewhite and Co's, The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, l788 (pl. 72), and the table's serpentined frame reflects the elegant style of the l780s illustrated in their Guide.

A similar satinwood and marquetry dressing-table was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 7 July 1994, lot 88 and another related mahogany dressing-table was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 14 November 1996, lot 11. Phillips of Hitchen advertised a closely related dressing-table in Connoisseur, June 1966.
