Decorated in gold hiramaki-e on a polished black lacquer ground with the encircled mokko design and elaborately engraved gilt copper fittings and lock-plate with a similar design with peony, the interior with a tray, minor old wear

Lot Essay

The crest is most possibly that of the Hotta family of Sakura and Miyagawa, as illustrated in V-F. Weber, Koji Hoten, Dictionnaire l'Usage des Amateurs et Collectionneurs d'Objets d'Art Japonais et Chinois, Vol. 2 (New York, 1975), app. XIX, pl.24, no. 204.
