Lot Essay

The strong demand from local businessmen for pictures of the city and docks led Grimshaw to paint this subject many times. Light from the shop windows reflects in wet cobbles, as the rigging from the moored ships is carefully described. Similar views were also painted of the docks at Liverpool and Hull, the two other principal ports of the nineteenth century.
