Lot Essay

Dina Vierny has confirmed the authenticity of this painting.

This painting is closely related in conception to Maillol's sculpture Mditerrane. The figures have a timeless classic beauty, reminiscent of Hellenistic sculpture. The colorful palette, on the other hand, shows the influence of Post-Impressionism, and especially Gauguin.
